Scott Patterson is watching Gilmore Girls for the first time and is quickly becoming obsessed. He’s still riled up about Scott Cohen’s Max Medina rubbing Lorelai’s elbow at the diner in the episode “Cinnamon’s Wake.” So on this episode of I Am All In, he talks with Scott Cohen about why he was doing “all the touching” and whether he ever considered that his character’s behavior would put Rory Gilmore in a weird position at school. Does Cohen think it’s inappropriate for a teacher to date a student’s parent? Or is this all just Patterson’s Luke being jealous? They have a great time laughing about Max and Lorelai in this interview, plus remembering their days on set, the dense scripts, and the wonderful relationships they still have because of the show.

Cohen pushes back on Patterson’s claim that Max’s behavior is inappropriate, pointing out that if a teacher is really involved in their job, who else do they meet but other teachers and the parents of students? But he felt that Max really loved Lorelai, so much that he would have left Chilton if it came down to it. “Extremely honorable statement. That almost stops the train dead in its tracks! You’re good,” Patterson tells him. Cohen goes on to say that Luke would have gotten together with a Lorelai a lot sooner if he’d just done a little touching of his own: “It would have been a three-year show!” he laughs. Patterson quips, “That’s why I’m so worked up about it! ‘I can rub a little bit. Why can’t I rub?!’”

Then Patterson asks what Cohen’s favorite memory from the show is. “It has nothing to do with the show,” he says; it was how they acted on September 11, 2001. He explains that he was in L.A. shooting the show, but his wife and child were in New York City, where they lived. When the towers fell, he was trying desperately to get in touch with them, but couldn’t get through. He went to the studio, and “they put me in a room and for 12 hours, they patched me through all these ways of trying to get through to my wife’s cell phone” until he was finally able to reach her. They also made sure he was on the first plane available back to New York. “I was just totally being taken care of….I’ll never forget it.” Listen to the episode for more great stories from Scott Cohen and Scott Patterson on I Am All In.
